Opening a MID File
The MID file type is primarily associated with MIDI player.
What is a MID file?
- It contains note, timing, and control change information.
- It is played by a MIDI player or system synthesizer, for example, the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.
- The file size is kept small because it stores instructions, not actual sound data.
FilExt.com tip: For more details, check the information available at Microsoft documentation.
How do you open MID files?
You need a suitable software like MIDI player to open a MID file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MID file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MID file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MID file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MID files:
The MID file extension is quite widespread and primarily uses a special format that can be read by various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 90% of all MID files are MIDI Music files, which are based on the MIDI file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 340 bytes to 54 KB in size. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. The following keywords are characteristic: MThd and MTrk. Files like these are about song, midi, theme, user, piano, balladw, music and play.
- 1% of all MID files use the popular RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 110 KB to 210 KB.
All other MID files (9%) have different formats. Files like these are sometimes linked to battle, ringtone, major, scale, polyphonic, garden, melody, alert, never or love. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your MID file!

How to solve problems with MID files
- Associate the MID file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open midi files. Because only the current version supports the latest MID file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available MIDI player update.
- To make sure that your MID file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .MID file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
