What is an MPLS file?

MPLS files mostly belong to VLC by VideoLAN. An MPLS file is a Blu-ray movie playlist which typically references an MPEG-2 video stream stored on a Blu-ray disc. MPLS files contain information used to reproduce a movie's start time, out-time, filename, and a path to the video's location. Multiple MPLS files are stored in the BDMV/PLAYLIST directory and each file's name has the form #####.MPLS (a five-digit number followed by .MPLS). The five-digit number representing the base name of the video file is always the same with the base name of the corresponding playlist file.

How to open an MPLS file

You need a suitable software like VLC to open an MPLS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MPLS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MPLS file directly in the browser:. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). 80% of all MPLS files are Blu-ray Movie Playlist Information files. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 590 bytes in size and range from 170 bytes to 4 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as MPLS0200. The file name 00000.mpls or 00001.mpls is typical for these files.
