Opening an MTN File
The MTN file type is primarily associated with Live2D Cubism Editor.
What is an MTN file?
These files store keyframe and parameter information that the Live2D software reads to animate characters.
How do you open MTN files?
You need a suitable software like Live2D Cubism Editor to open an MTN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MTN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MTN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert MTN files:
- Live2D Cubism Editor
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. MTN files are often referred to as Live2D Cubism Editor data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Live2D Cubism EditorA *.MTN file is a data file primarily associated with Live2D Cubism software. It stores animation motion data used for creating dynamic and expressive 2D character animations. These files contain information about the various movements, deformations, and transformations applied to a 2D model over time. The data within the *.MTN file defines how different parts of a 2D character model should move and deform to create the desired animation. This data is used by Live2D Cubism to render and display the animation in real-time. The *.MTN format is specific to Live2D Cubism and is used for storing and exchanging animation data within the Live2D ecosystem. This file format is classified as 2D Animation Data.
MTN file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the MTN files:
The MTN file extension is not common and includes different formats for the applicable programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 60% of all MTN files are Live2D Cubism Motion data files, which are based on the config file format. A configuration file is used by computer software to store settings. It consists of a text-based content with a structure and syntax comprising key–value pairs for properties, and sections that organize the properties. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 180 bytes to 28 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as # Live2D Animator Motion Data, $fps=30, fadein, fadeout and PARAM_ANGLE_X. The file name bouncing.mtn or idle.mtn is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about motion, clean, naked, alchemist, doroelle, finish and hevent.
- 25% of all MTN files start with the bytes PSB crucial for this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 100 KB to 22 MB in size. The file name title_bg.mtn or m2logo.mtn is typical for these files. Such files are related to title, logo and yuzulogo.
All other MTN files (15%) have no uniform format. Just click the "Choose your .mtn file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your MTN file is.
