What is an MX file?

MX files mostly belong to Mathematica by Wolfram. MX is a Wolfram Language serialized package format used for the distribution of Wolfram Language packages. Wolfram Language is a general multi-paradigm computational language used by the symbolic computation program Mathematica.

• File structure: MX is a binary file that stores arbitrary expressions in a serialized structure optimized for fast loading. It's read and written using commands: 'Import' or 'Get' opens an MX file, 'Export' serializes an arbitrary expression and saves it as an MX file.
• Compatibility: MX files created in later versions of Wolfram cannot be used by earlier verions. Other than Mathematica, you can also use MATLAB to read MX files. When it comes to cross-platform compatibility MX files cannot be exchanged between operating systems that differ in $SystemWordLength.

How to open an MX file

You need a suitable software like Mathematica to open an MX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MX file directly in the browser:. MX file format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. • 25% of all MX files use the same file format, which have the signature (*This is a . These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The file size is in the range of 1 KB to 67 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. agent, modified, (KHTML, like, like Gecko, Safari, Chrome, etag, <mxfile host="app.diagrams.net", 10.0; Win64;, Mozilla, Windows NT 10 and x64) AppleWebKit/537.36. An example of a file name is test.mx. Files like these are sometimes connected to drawio.

The remaining 60% of all MX files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. ZIP, MHTML, DOC, MP4, JFIF and FreeHand. They are often associated with paper, arzola or photo.
