What is an NKM file?

NKM files mostly belong to Kontakt. NKM files are used exclusively with Native Instruments Kontakt software. They are a specialized format that holds multisample instrument data.
These files store detailed instructions that the Kontakt engine uses to map samples to keys. They include elements such as:

How to open NKM files

To view or edit NKM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. The NKM file extension is rather rarely used and is used by different programs with different formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 40% of all NKM files start with the magic bytes /\ NI FC MTD /\, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 70 MB. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. /\ NI FC MTD /\. A common filename is vinyl.nkm or Gamelan CdM (Drums-Gong).nkm. Such files are related to music, gamelan, motown, guitar, sampler, drums, piano, gong, arpeggio, slendro, pelog and snare.
• 40% of all NKM files start with the magic bytes 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. NKM files can be up to 2 MB in size, but are often around 10 KB - 870 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: DSIN, DSINj, DSINv and hsin. Files like these are sometimes connected to music, cinematic, multiloop, strings, sounds, soundscinematicmultiloop, kontakt and patch.
