What is a NOMEDIA file?

NOMEDIA files mostly belong to Android by Open Handset Alliance. NOMEDIA is the name of an empty text file which signals that a folder on Android operating system does not contain media files. This file is simply named .nomedia; it does not have a base name. Media applications like image viewers and video players skip folders containing a NOMEDIA file when scanning a device's storage for media content. Third-party Android applications create a NOMEDIA file in their media folder when such applications don't want their media content to be visible in the device's built-in gallery and other media apps. Snapchat, for example, renames JPG images to .jpg.nomedia.
