What is an OLM file?

OLM files mostly belong to Microsoft Outlook by Microsoft. OLM(Outlook For Mac) is a binary database file format developed by Microsoft for Outlook For Mac, and is proprietary software. OLM files have the MIME-type Application/octet-stream and are designed as database files that store entire Outlook profiles and their data. An OLM file contains emails, contacts, calendars, tasks, notes, etc.
The default storage location of OLM storage files on Mac is ~/Document/Microsoft User Data/ Office 2011 Identities/ Main Identity/ Data Records/. OLM files do not have a maximum size limit, but tend to get corrupted when they exceed 2GB. There are tools that can repair corrupt OLM files including OLM File Repair Tool, Stellar OLM Repair and OLM Recovery Tool.
Only Outlook For Mac can safely open OLM files. To open OLM files in Outlook for Windows, the file must first be converted to PST, the file format used on Windows.
Programs that can view OLM files on Mac include OLM Viewer and OLM Reader for Mac OS.
OLM files can be converted into multiple formats by converter programs which include OLM to PST Converter and OLM Extractor Max. Outlook 2011 for Mac can import OLM files and export them into various other file types such as CSV.

How to open an OLM file

You need a suitable software like Microsoft Outlook from Microsoft to open an OLM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OLM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OLM file directly in the browser:. OLM file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the OLM files:

OLM is seldom used as a file extension and mainly uses a defined OLM format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 96% of all OLM files are based on the zip format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one OLM file. The 5 to 100 compressed files are called Categories.xml, \Accounts\ and \Local\. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. OLM files can be up to 52 GB in size, but are often around 180 KB - 10 GB. The following keywords are characteristic: Categories.xml, OPFCategoryCopyBackgroundColor, OPFCategoryCopyName, categories elementCount, category xml, preserve and space. Outlook for Mac Archive.olm or Outlook fu-r Mac-Archiv.olm is a typical file name. Such files are related to archivio, para, archivos, pour and email.
