If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the OPML files:
An OPML file mainly uses a defined OPML format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 90% of all OPML files are Outline Processor Markup Language files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are plain text, which means they can be viewed with any text editor such as Windows Editor, Nano for Linux, and TextEdit for macOS. A typical file size is 5 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords title, <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <head>, outline text, <opml version="1.0">, <body> and </head> are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are overcast.opml. These files are often associated with feedly, feeds, backup, firefox, feeder, data, firefoxfeedsbackup, subscriptions, security and export.
