What is an OSA file?

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The OSA file extension is not widely used. Such a file is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in OSA files:

• 40% of all OSA files start with the magic bytes 00 00 0B B8 00 00 00 04, which are always the first bytes of this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. A typical file size is 110 KB. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. • 20% of all OSA files are based on the well-known CAP file format. CAP files are compressed archives. The first bytes (the signature) are 'MSCF' (short for MicroSoft Cabinet File). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 1 MB to 4 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. MSCF. Files like these are about hush, and often include person-related information.

The remaining 40% of all OSA files are different files with different signatures, frequently e.g. ZIP, serialization, AUFS and ORTHOSCRIBE.
