What is an OV file?

OV files mostly belong to OpenViBE.

The OV file extension is used in several distinct ways. It may be an OpenViBE stream file stored in an MKV container.

It can also be a firmware upgrade file. In this case the file is associated with HiSilicon devices and is handled by the OV Upgrade Tool for updating firmware stored in NVRAM.

How to open OV files

You need a suitable software like OpenViBE to open an OV file. To find out what program is needed to open OV files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. As a file extension, OV isn't very common and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 25% of all OV files use the popular MKV file format. MKV is short for Matroska Multimedia Container. It can hold an unlimited number of video, audio, picture, or subtitle tracks in one file. It is a universal format for storing common multimedia content, like movies or TV shows. Matroska is similar to AVI, MP4, or ASF, but is entirely open in specification and consisting of open source software. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 350 KB to 40 MB in size. It is a modern file type. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as OpenViBE_Stream_FileB. A usual file name is motor-imagery-csp-1-acquisition-[2020.06.01 10.30].ov or record-[2020.06.01 10.30].ov. Files like these have the following tags: imagery, motor, train, acquisition, ssvep, training, online and xdawn.
• 20% of all OV files start with the magic bytes 15 25 12 08, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 13 MB in size and range from 12 MB to 13 MB. The following keywords are characteristic: 3.1.1.1. An example of a file name is 565b97d2550ad41fcfec30f79c755df0-UPG_ipc3360a-w7-M20-hi3518-20180601.ov. Files like these are sometimes connected to fcfec, ipdoor and mobile.
