Opening a PAV File
The PAV file type is primarily associated with Prosys OPC Client.
What is a PAV file?
For many users, a Process Automation Viewer file stores automated process data. These files use the Microsoft Compound format to hold trend data and process settings. They work with software like the Prosys OPC Client. In some systems, they are also known as Wonderware InTouch Trend Data files used with platforms such as PASCO Capstone. For more details, see the Prosys OPC website.
Another set of PAV files acts as scanner profiles. These files hold settings for Fujitsu fi Series scanners and are used by the PaperStream IP Driver. More information can be found at PFU's scanner page.
How can I open a PAV file?
You need a suitable software like Prosys OPC Client to open a PAV file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PAV file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PAV file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PAV files:
- Prosys OPC Client
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PAV files are often referred to as Prosys OPC Client settings because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- MediaMatrix (Peavey Architectural View) by Peavey ElectronicsThink of this as an audio spreadsheet where you design a full audio system. This file format is classified as Audio.

PAV file extension format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the PAV files:
The PAV file extension is not found very often and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 50% of all PAV files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). The file contains several sections with names like Contents. PAV files are between 26 KB and 110 KB in size. The file type is relatively new.
- 15% of all PAV files start with the bytes 01 00 01 00 09 00 05 00 50, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are 27 KB to 140 KB in size, with a median of 80 KB. The keywords PAVS and FTS_EX000001.xml are typical for these files. Such PAV files store data about settings, scanner, contracting, digital, profile, profiles, states and psip.
The remaining 35% of all PAV files are different files with different signatures, such as Peak. They are often associated with movie. You can get all the details of your PAV file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .pav file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with PAV files
- Associate the PAV file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open configuration files. Because only the current version supports the latest PAV file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Prosys OPC Client update.
- To make sure that your PAV file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
