All about PEK Files
The PEK file type is primarily associated with Adobe Premiere Pro.
What is a PEK file?
When you import audio into Adobe Premiere Pro, the program automatically creates a PEK file. This file holds the audio peak information so that the timeline displays the waveform rapidly.
A smaller group of PEK files is used as a game data file in some contexts. These files, associated with tools like PekEdit, hold configuration or asset information for game projects by Perfect World.
How do you open PEK files?
You need a suitable software like Adobe Premiere Pro to open a PEK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PEK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PEK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PEK files:
- Adobe Premiere Pro
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PEK files are often referred to as Adobe Premiere Pro audios because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Premiere (Graphic Waveform Data) by Adobe Systems IncorporatedWhenever you open or import a file (movie clip), Premiere automatically converts the audio track into a new proprietary format called conformed audio files. These files are stored in a folder called Conformed Audio Files on the same directory level as the project. Inside the folder are two files for each clip. One has the extension .CPA. This file is the actual newly created audio file. The other file, which has a .PEK extension, contains the graphic waveform data for the audio file.
PEK file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the PEK files:
The PEK extension is quite commonly used. The file itself mainly uses a defined PEK format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 95% of all PEK files are Adobe Premiere Peak Waveform files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 10 KB to 900 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. These files can be linked to audio, video, artlist, whoosh, music, voiceover, extracted and sound.
All other PEK files (5%) have different formats. These files sometimes refer to screen, comp, cinematic, elements, desktop, herudek, wizard, green, intro, movie, peaks, proxy, riser, clip, vlog or zoom. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PEK file!
Technical Data for PEK File Extension
a pek metadata file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PEK files
- Associate the PEK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open metadata files. Because only the current version supports the latest PEK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Adobe Premiere Pro update.
- To make sure that your PEK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PEK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
