What is a PEK file?

PEK files mostly belong to Adobe Premiere Pro. Adobe Premiere Pro peak files are a type of metadata file used to store audio waveform data. They help the editing software load waveforms quickly without recalculating them each time you work with an audio track.

Whenever you open or import a file (movie clip), Premiere automatically converts the audio track into a new proprietary format called conformed audio files. These files are stored in a folder called Conformed Audio Files on the same directory level as the project. Inside the folder are two files for each clip. One has the extension .CPA. This file is the actual newly created audio file. The other file, which has a .PEK extension, contains the graphic waveform data for the audio file.

95% of all PEK files are Adobe Premiere Peak Waveform files. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 6 KB to 960 KB. The file type is relatively new. These files can be linked to audio, video, music, camera, intro, artlist, shake and clip.
1% of all PEK files start with the magic bytes Pek., which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. Most of these files are 190 KB to 140 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Pek. Some examples of file names are Configs.pek or Drops.pek. Files like these are about monsters.
