What is a PIT file

PIT files mostly belong to Odin. There are primarily two different types of PIT files that fit in two different categories: system files and compressed files. While compressed files are used to store information into smaller compressed archives, system files are critical files used by device drivers or part of an operating system.

  • System files: Developed by Samsung, these are firmware files used in the company's smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy series. PIT files are part of firmware files that are flashed onto the device by their manufacturer. They are not meant to be manually edited. The information stored on these files is mostly the partition information table for the phone. Though different versions of the mobile phone contain different partition layouts, the specific configuration on every phone is decided by the manufacturer.
  • Compressed files: PIT compressed files are one of the few original Macintosh file compression formats. However, they have been replaced by faster, smaller and more advanced compressing algorithms such as ZIP, RAR, and SIT. Though developed by Apple, PIT compressed files are supported by Windows-based systems as well using the Stuffit Deluxe compression utility.

How can I open a PIT file?

You need a suitable software like Odin to open a PIT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PIT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PIT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  2. PackIt (compressed archive file) by Harry Chesley
PackIt was a file compression and archiving utility written by Harry Chesley to distribute code and other files for an online magazine. The format became the de facto standard for compression on macOS systems. New development ended in 1986. PIT is the extension for compressed archives created using PackIt. This file format is classified as Compressed. Related links: PackIt on Wikipedia, PIT Files in Mac Documentation

PIT file format details:

If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the PIT files looks like this:

Files with the PIT extension are quite widely used. This file type is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

All the rest of the PIT files (63%) have different formats, such as PackIt compressed archive and GIF. Sometimes used for product, information, escritorio, microsoft, desktop or spss. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PIT file!
