Opening a PJG File
The PJG file type is primarily associated with Photo Assistant.
What is a PJG file?
Functionality and Use Cases:
- Image Storage: Contains a compressed photo using the JPEG standard.
- Metadata Inclusion: Some PJG files include metadata, as seen with JPEGView.
- Alternate Naming: Certain applications, such as ZenFone Photo Collage, save JPEG images with the PJG extension.
- Compatibility: Opens in any standard image viewer that supports JPEG files.
Even though the extension is different, the content is similar to common .JPG files. Some tools like Photo Assistant use this extension, and a subset of these images was processed with variations in metadata.

FilExt.com note: This information helps to know that PJG files are essentially JPEG images with a different file extension to suit specific software needs.
How do you open PJG files?
You need a suitable software like Photo Assistant to open a PJG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PJG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PJG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PJG files:
- Photo Assistant
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PJG files are often referred to as Photo Assistant raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- packJPG (Lossless JPEG Compression (JIFIF Complient)) by Hochschule AalenFrom 2004 to 2008, new research has emerged on ways to further compress the data contained in JPEG images without modifying the represented image. A freely-available tool called packJPG is said to do this and is based on the 2007 paper Improved Redundancy Reduction for JPEG Files. Extracting PJG files produces the original JPEG file bitwise depending on options chosen. However they act as a solid archive and may not be directly viewable. A plug-in for XnView exists. This file format is classified as Graphic. Related links: Wikipedia JPEG Lossless Compression Info, XnView Plug-in List/Links
- Photo AssistantPhoto Shops use this format so the customers only can reprint photos in the shop. This file format is classified as Graphic.
PJG format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the PJG files:
PJG is not a commonly used file extension and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all PJG files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "Photo Assistant Image File" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 900 KB with most files being between 270 KB and 2 MB in size. The file type was primarily used more than 20 years ago. The keywords Photo Assistant Image File, a:\Image0001.pjg and CDTemp are typical for these files. The file name Image0001.pjg or Image0002.pjg is characteristic of these files. These files can be linked to pass and passbild.
- 20% of all PJG files belong to packJPG compressed JPEG bitmap. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 39 KB to 1 MB. An example of a file name is 1a.pjg or Front.pjg. These files can be linked to back.
All other PJG files (15%) have no consistent format, often, for example, JPG. These files sometimes refer to imperiale. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PJG file!
