What is a PKB file?

PKB files mostly belong to Oracle SQL Developer. Oracle PL/SQL Package Body and ServiceNow Bundle: PKB files are used mainly as Oracle package body files. They store the code that implements procedures and functions defined in an Oracle PL/SQL package. The package body works alongside a package specification file (often with a .PKS extension) that declares its interface.
These files serve two main roles:

Oracle PL/SQL Use: Contains the executable code for database packages. Changes require recompilation, which may affect dependent objects.

ServiceNow Package Bundle: Some PKB files use a ZIP format to bundle configuration and metadata. This variant is linked with package files in environments such as Salesforce Marketing Cloud.

How to open a PKB file

You need a suitable software like Oracle SQL Developer to open a PKB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our examination of the PKB files comes to the following conclusion:

PKB is not a common file extension and includes different formats for the applicable programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all PKB files use the same file format, which have the signature CREATE OR REPLACE . These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The file size is in the range of 8 KB to 260 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. BODY, CREATE and REPLACE PACKAGE.
• 9% of all PKB files use the ZIP algorithm, that is, a PKB file includes multiple compressed files. A typical number of included files is 97. File names inside are package-bundle-info.json and \metadata\. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. PKB files are between 73 KB and 1 MB in size. The keywords package-bundle-info and json are typical for these files. These files are often associated with customization, package, tracker and user.
