What is a PNF file?

PNF files mostly belong to Windows by Microsoft. A PNF file contains precompiled setup information generated when an INF (setup information file) is run on Windows operating system. PNF files on a computer are saved in the %SystemRoot%\inf or %Windir%\inf folder. Windows uses INF and PNF files to manage software and driver installation. INF files are saved as plain text but PNF files are saved in binary format.

How to open PNF files

You need a suitable software like Windows from Microsoft to open a PNF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PNF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PNF file directly in the browser:. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. The PNF file type is a very commonly used file extension and is primarily used by a single program. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 75% of all PNF files are associated with Windows precompiled INF. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. A typical file size is 15 KB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: C:\WINDOWS. These files can be linked to wpdmtp, display, usbstor, cdrom and acpi.
• 15% of all PNF files are based on the well-known UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are often between 8 KB and 9 KB in size. The files contain the following words: [Information], [Version], Provider = Kyocera, PackageKey = GX and Version = 07/09/2007,4.2.1909. An example of a file name is GX.pnf or GXPS.pnf. Such files are related to kxps, msusbscan and kpdl.
