- Check the Header: Open the file in a text editor or hex viewer to inspect the opening lines.
<?xmlor<project>: Indicates a readable Maven XML configuration.- "PK" or garbled text: Suggests a compressed archive or an unrelated binary format.

POM file format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the POM files looks like this:
The file type with the extension 'POM' mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 70% of all POM files are Maven Project Object Model files, which are based on the XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. POM files are between 460 bytes and 9 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The files contain the following words: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <project xmlns="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0", maven-4, http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance and <project xsi:schemaLocation="http://maven.apache.org/POM/4.0.0. These files are attributed to core, android, gradle, client, parent, plugin, spring and debug.
- 10% of all POM files use the popular PNG file format. PNG is short for Portable Network Graphics. It is a high-quality raster image file that supports lossless data compression. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. POM files are between 69 KB and 460 KB in size. The files contain the following words: IDATx, IHDR and sRGB.
The remaining 20% of all POM files are different files with different signatures, the following 6 formats exist: Maven Project Object Model and DOC. They are often associated with snapshot, michelin, platform, green, guide, itext or java. Just click the "Choose your .pom file to view" button on this page to find out what your POM file is.
