Opening PXM Files
The PXM file type is primarily associated with Pixelmator.
What is a PXM file?
How do you open PXM files?
You need a suitable software like Pixelmator to open a PXM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PXM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PXM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PXM file format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our analysis of the PXM files produces the following result:
You will often come across the PXM file type. This mainly uses a defined PXM format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 85% of all PXM files belong to Pixelmator bitmap. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The file size is in the range of 350 KB to 24 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. The files contain the following words: PXMDMETA, bplist00, U$null, 0123456789, X$versionX$objectsY$archiverT$top, .WNS.keysZNS.objectsV$class, NSKeyedArchiver, Troot and X$versionY$archiverT$topX$objects. These files are often associated with logo, background, white, machka, purple, poster, cover and card.
- 6% of all PXM files use the ZIP format, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one PXM file. A PXM file includes 1 to 6 files. File names inside are always project. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 1 KB to 1 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as project.
All the rest of the PXM files (9%) have different formats, often e.g. Pixelmator graphic and XML. Often described as image, certificate, screenshot, dashoard, design, edited, page, plan or side. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PXM file!

How to solve problems with PXM files
- Associate the PXM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open layered images. Because only the current version supports the latest PXM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Pixelmator Team manufacturer website after an available Pixelmator update.
- To make sure that your PXM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
