What is a QBO file?

QBO files mostly belong to Quickbooks by Intuit. A QBO file contains financial information saved by QuickBooks business accounting software. This file is saved in QFX format which is Intuit's proprietary variant of Open Financial Exchange (OFX) format. Various banking applications use OFX format to receive and transfer a customer's financial information over the Internet. When such data is prepared with QuickBooks, it is saved as a QBO file. Another type of QBO file is a database query compiled with and used by dBASE database management system.

How to open a QBO file

You need a suitable software like Quickbooks to open a QBO file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The following filename is common: accountactivity.qbo. Files like these are about transactions, checking, history, export, transaction, stmt, statement and cibc.
• 10% of all QBO files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. A typical file size is 12 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. encoding, utf-8 and <?xml version="1.0" standalone="no"?><?OFX OFXHEADER="200" VERSI. The following filename is common: activity.qbo or 2020-06-01_transaction_download.qbo. Such QBO files store data about download.

The remaining 15% of all QBO files are files with no common format, often, for example, dBASE compiled Query and OFXHEADER.
