Opening a QPT File
The QPT file type is primarily associated with QGIS.
What is a QPT file
This file saves your map layout settings. It holds details such as:
How do you open QPT files?
You need a suitable software like QGIS to open a QPT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your QPT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a QPT file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert QPT files:
- QGIS
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. QPT files are often referred to as QGIS page layouts because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- QGISA QPT file is a QGIS Print Layout Template. It stores the layout of a map, including elements like the map itself, legends, scale bars, titles, and other annotations, but not the map data itself. This allows users to save and reuse print layouts for different map projects, maintaining a consistent style and presentation across various outputs. The template defines the arrangement and properties of these elements, ensuring reproducible high-quality map outputs in various formats (PDF, image, etc.). This file format is classified as GIS File.
QPT file format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the QPT files looks like this:
The QPT file extension is not found very often and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 80% of all QPT files use the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. A typical file size is 76 KB. The file type is relatively new. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Layout, Snapper, name, snapToItems, snapToGuides, printResolution, worldFileMap, tolerance, units and snapToGrid. These files are attributed to plantilla, carte, layout, template, mapa, plano, mapas, landscape and vorlage.
- 5% of all QPT files belong to QGIS Composer Template. The files are using the common file format XML. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 4 KB to 30 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as Composer title, visible, <Composition resizeToContentsMarginLeft="0", guidesVisible="1" resizeToContentsMarginTop="0", snapping="0" showPages="1" and worldFileMap.
The remaining 15% of all QPT files are files with no common format. Just click the "Choose your .qpt file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your QPT file is.
Technical Data for QPT File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a qpt template file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with QPT files
- Associate the QPT file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open template files. Because only the current version supports the latest QPT file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available QGIS update.
- To make sure that your QPT file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .QPT file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
