REP format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the REP files is as follows:
The REP extension is very commonly found and does not have a uniform file format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all REP files use the same file format, which have the signature ROS.. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 69 KB to 570 KB. The file type is old but is used even today. The keywords !"#$%&'()*+,-./0123456789:;<=>?@ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz{!}~ and ROS.60050 are typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to list, letter, report, transfer, clouts, rptcrc, folio, bank, cons and zarf.
- 4% of all REP files use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This is a complex container format used by earlier versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows programs. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 310 KB in size and range from 54 KB to 4 MB.
The remaining 81% of all REP files are different files with different signatures, the following 50 formats can be found: Starcraft Replay, Grand Theft Auto, ZIP, config, GZIP, WordPerfect, UTF-8, XML, HTML, PDF, PRI, Date, GENREP, MBAAReplayFile, FileName, ISA, SREP and object. The category is idahoan, service, boeing, expenditure, load, receipt, asplay or kaos. If you want to find out which format your REP file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .rep file to analyze".
