What is an RWL file?

RWL files mostly belong to Lightroom by Adobe. RWL is the filename extension of high-resolution photographs captured with Leica digital cameras such as the D-Lux 7. RWL images are stored as uncompressed graphical data captured by the camera's image sensor. The file's structure is based on the TIFF/EP format. However, it has a different signature and its MakerNote tag begins with the word "LEICA". While Leica cameras are not shipped with computer software for importing and editing RWL images, various third-party image processors support this format. Some of these programs are Photos, Photoshop, Capture One, Lightroom, and PhotoDirector. RWL is also the filename extension of text-based ring width data files stored in Tuscon (also called decadal or RWL) format. This second type of RWL format is used by various data computation/visualization technologies (including R programming language). You can edit its contents with any plain text editor.

How do you open RWL files?

You need a suitable software like Lightroom to open an RWL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RWL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RWL file directly in the browser:. How to solve problems with RWL files

Associate the RWL file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open raw images. Because only the current version supports the latest RWL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Lightroom update.
