What is an SCAD file?

SCAD files mostly belong to OpenSCAD by Marius Kintel. A SCAD file is a 2D/3D machine part drawing or model script created with OpenSCAD scriptable solid modeling software. The contents of a SCAD file are written in plain text. They include object geometry represented by variables, functions, closures, loops, and mathematical variables all of which are used to render a 2D or 3D machine part. FreeCAD parametric 3D design and building information modeling program can also be used to open and edit a SCAD drawing/model.

How to open SCAD files

You need a suitable software like OpenSCAD to open an SCAD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SCAD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SCAD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

  2. FreeCAD (2D/3D design script) by The FreeCAD Team
FreeCAD is an open source program used for 3D computer-aided solid modeling program. Using its OpenSCAD Workbench component, FreeCAD can open and edit a SCAD drawing/model script file created with OpenSCAD. This file format is classified as CAD. Related links: Import OpenSCAD code

How to solve problems with SCAD files

  • Associate the SCAD file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open 2d/3d design scripts. Because only the current version supports the latest SCAD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Marius Kintel manufacturer website after an available OpenSCAD update.
  • To make sure that your SCAD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
