4 Steps to Open an Unknown .SFZ File
SFZ files can come from different programs and aren't universally openable.
- Identify the Source: If received from a music producer, it's likely a text-based virtual instrument. If from an archivist, it may be an SFzip SoundFont File Archive.
- Check the Header: Inspect the first bytes in a text editor or hex viewer:
- Readable text like
<region>implies a standard SFZ instrument. - "PK" or archive magic bytes suggest a compressed SFzip archive.
- Readable text like
- Use the Original Software: The original program is usually required; try Plogue Sforzando, ARIA Player, or an SFzip extractor. If uncertain, ask the sender.
- Use this Webpage: Drag and drop the file into our viewer to detect the format, extract readable text/metadata, and preview when possible.
SFZ file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the SFZ files looks like this:
SFZ is rarely used as a file extension and mainly uses a defined SFZ format. The file formats most commonly found in SFZ files are:
- 70% of all SFZ files are SFZ Sample definition files, which are using the popular Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 26 KB with most files being between 600 bytes and 290 KB in size. The keywords // ********* are typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to piano.
- 10% of all SFZ files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one SFZ file. 1 to 3 compressed files are common. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. The files are 3 KB to 830 KB in size, with a median of 370 KB.
All other SFZ files (20%) have no consistent format. If you want to find out which format your SFZ file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .sfz file to analyze".
