What is an SHL file?

SHL files mostly belong to Shot Lister. The SHL extension is used for files that do not follow one strict standard. Instead, they are employed by different industries for specific data tasks.
For example, one common usage is as a film and TV shot list file. These files often use an internal JSON format and are handled by applications such as Shot Lister.
Other uses include:

• CNC program files and shell scripts – these can contain machine instructions or shell parameters.

How to open an SHL file

You need a suitable software like Shot Lister to open an SHL file. To find out what program is needed to open SHL files, you need to determine the file format. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the SHL files is as follows:

The SHL file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 9% of all SHL files are using the well-known JSON file format to store the data. JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data−interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The average file size is 12 KB with most files being between 3 KB and 39 KB in size. The files contain the following words: scenes, action, fullPageCount, locationName, note, numberExt, pageNumber, uuid and keywords.
• 7% of all SHL files have the same signature 63 3A. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. The file size is in the range of 38 bytes to 50 bytes. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as wvb 1150 1 and wvb 2116 1. A common filename is cncautorun.shl.

All the rest of the SHL files (84%) have different formats, often, for example, .NET, DOC, WordPerfect, author, XFS and Version. Sometimes used for param, level, data, journal, similar, economics, quarterly, shell or value.
