What is an SMALI file

SMALI files mostly belong to Smali/baksmali by Ben Gruver and Smali Community. A SMALI file contains source code written in the assembly language used by Smali assembler/disassembler for Android platform. This file is usually generated from disassembled Dalvik (DEX) or Java (CLASS) bytecode of an Android application using smali/baksmali disassembler. By generating human-readable SMALI code from bytecode, programmers are able to modify the source code of existing applications. A SMALI file compiled to Dalvik bytecode can also be executed by the Dalvik virtual machine on Android operating system.
