What is an SMG file?

SMG files mostly belong to SolidWorks by Dassault Systèmes. An SMG file is a 3D model created with SolidWork's Composer package. Unlike standard SolidWorks part and assembly models, Composer uses an SMG file to store a model which has been repurposed to explain technical processes (e.g. manufacturing assembly instructions and technical communications). For this reason, the SMG file also contains animation used to simulate such processes. The file is actually a RAR or ZIP archive with a different filename extension. Component files of this archive include SMGXML, SMGGEOM, and SMGOUTLINES which are required to render the geometry, views, and animations in a 3D scene.

How to open an SMG file

You need a suitable software like SolidWorks to open an SMG file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SMG file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SMG file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SMG files:

  1. SolidWorks by Dassault Systèmes
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SMG files are often referred to as SolidWorks cads because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. VoiceLink Player (voice message) by inChorus
VoiceLink Player is a discontinued Windows-compatible application for playing voice messages sent or received through email VoiceLink+, an email-based multimedia sharing application. A voice messages sent with email VoiceLink+ is saved in an SMG file which is played with VoiceLink Player. This file format is classified as Audio.

SMG format details:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the SMG files is as follows:

SMG is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type is primarily used by a single program. However, the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 15% of all SMG files are different files with different signatures. Just click the "Choose your .smg file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your SMG file is.

How to solve problems with SMG files

  • Associate the SMG file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open 3d models. Because only the current version supports the latest SMG file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Dassault Systèmes manufacturer website after an available SolidWorks update.
  • To make sure that your SMG file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
