What is a SOX file?

SOX files mostly belong to SoftMaker Office. SOX files are not a single uniform file type. In many cases they are compressed archives that use the ZIP format. This is most common with SoftMaker Office files where the file acts as a compressed dictionary or data container. You can often rename a SOX file to .zip and use your normal archive tool to view its contents.
Besides the compressed archive use, some SOX files hold a serialized Object Exchange Format for data transfer systems such as Salt OpeneXchange. In other applications, a SOX file may function as a PC7 database index file used in Medisoft programs and related WordPerfect environments.

How to open SOX files

You need a suitable software like SoftMaker Office to open a SOX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. How to convert a SOX file to ZIP, RAR, 7Z, TAR, GZ, ...

1. To do so, click the "Choose your .sox file to play" button above.

To find out what program is needed to open SOX files, you need to determine the file format. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. The SOX file extension mainly uses a defined SOX format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 80% of all SOX files are based on the zip format, so several files are compressed and saved in one SOX file. Primarily 4 to 10 files are included. File names inside are always dict.ini. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are often between 190 KB and 1 MB in size. The files contain the following words: dict. Some examples of file names are softmaker-hunspell-english-us-101.sox or softmaker-hunspell-german-de-101.sox. Files like these are about portuguese, spanish, swedish and dutch.
• 4% of all SOX files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "SOX" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 1 MB in size and range from 130 bytes to 2 MB. The following filename is common: classes.sox.
