What is an STATE file?

STATE files mostly belong to Emulators. STATE files are files that record the current snapshot of a program's or game's state. They store data about progress, configuration, or a session so that an application can resume work exactly where it left off.

How to open STATE files

You need a suitable software like Emulators to open an STATE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. STATE file format:

Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the STATE files:

The STATE file extension is quite widespread and includes very many different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in STATE files:

• 20% of all STATE files are RetroArch Save State files. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are on average 520 KB in size and range from 200 KB to 820 KB. The file type is very recent. The keywords RASTATE, MEM @ and POKEMON are typical for these files. Such files are related to pokemon, emerald, pokemonemerald, mario, europe, super, fire, zelda and bros.
• 15% of all STATE files start with the magic bytes 00 00 00 01 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. A typical file size is 230 bytes. Files like these are sometimes connected to downloading, guide, maths, jeux, partie, lecture and pour.

All other STATE files (65%) have different formats, frequently e.g. atari++ state, Bizhawk saved state, BZ2, .NET, XML, JSON, plist, GZIP, EULA, FCS, GENPLUS, meta, DeSmuME, SAVE, LFHEAD and TPF.
