What is an SVGZ file?

SVGZ files mostly belong to Illustrator by Adobe. SVGZ files are Gzip-compressed versions of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) images. An SVGZ file is usually created when a web server or an image processing application which transfers images over a network applies Gzip compression to an SVG file in order to reduce the bandwidth required to send the image to a client (e.g. web browser). SVG itself is an XML-based markup language used to describe 2D graphics on various platforms. Because the contents of an SVG file is written in text (XML), the same fragment of text may be repeated multiple times in the file. This repetition makes SVG files suitable for lossless compression with gzip algorithm by replacing redundant data with indexes. As a result, SVGZ files are usually 50% to 80% smaller than uncompressed SVG files. Gzip-capable image editors and web servers/clients such as Chrome, Illustrator, and Inkscape can open SVG images.

How to open an SVGZ file

You need a suitable software like Illustrator to open an SVGZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SVGZ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SVGZ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SVGZ files:

  1. Illustrator by Adobe
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SVGZ files are often referred to as Illustrator vector images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
  2. Inkscape (compressed image) by Inkscape
Inkscape is a free, cross-platform vector graphics editor for creating 2D and 3D book illustrations, book covers, icons, labels etc. You can create, save, open, and edit SVGZ images with Inkscape. This file format is classified as Vector Image. Related links: Scalable Vector Graphics
  3. PaintShop (compressed image) by Corel
PaintShop is a professional photo-editing and raster graphics design software. You can create and open SVGZ images with PaintShop. This file format is classified as Vector Image. Related links: Scalable Vector Graphics

SVGZ file format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SVGZ files looks like this:

The SVGZ file extension is quite common and is used by different programs with different formats. But the following two file formats are common:

The remaining 10% of all SVGZ files are files with no common format. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your SVGZ file!

an svgz compressed image is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.

How to solve problems with SVGZ files

  • Associate the SVGZ file extension with the correct application.
  • Update your software that should actually open compressed images. Because only the current version supports the latest SVGZ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Illustrator update.
  • To make sure that your SVGZ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
  • Click here to open your .SVGZ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
