Opening a TOS File
The TOS file type is primarily associated with TOSwin2.
What is a TOS file?
The second type is a game save file used in The Escapists 2. This version is built using the .NET framework and stores game progress and settings. For more details on this usage, visit the official page The Escapists 2.
To work with these files, use software appropriate to their function. If your file is an Atari ST executable, you will need an Atari emulator to run or inspect it. If it is a game save file, load it with The Escapists 2. Note that these files are stored in a binary format, so opening them with a basic text editor will not display readable content.
Tips:
How to open TOS files
You need a suitable software like TOSwin2 to open a TOS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TOS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TOS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TOS files:
- TOSwin2
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TOS files are often referred to as TOSwin2 executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

- The Only Sheet PLUS [TOS+] (Data File) by Richard TaillonThe Only Sheet+ is a Microsoft Excel workbook which has been designed to automate many aspects of character maintenance for players of the Dungeons & Dragons version 3.5 game published by Wizards of the Coast. The Only Sheet is entirely based on the System Reference Document, which is part of the Open Game License. This is a text file, similar to a .ini file, which contains information about a Character. [A prior version (TOS) used the extension MCS which the new version cannot open.] This file format is classified as Text.
TOS file format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the TOS files produces the following result:
The TOS file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in TOS files:
- 30% of all TOS files are STZip SFX archive executable files. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 28 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. .grJ9. Some examples of file names are SPEECH20.TOS or Stspeech.tos.
- 15% of all TOS files use the popular .NET file format. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. The files are 1 KB to 1.1 KB in size, with a median of 1 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as FAssembly-CSharp, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null, PlayerData, currentObjectiveIDs, currentObjectiveSteps, dateTime, dayOfSave, itemNames, money and completed. An example of a file name is sdatar60.tos.
All other TOS files (55%) have no consistent format. Often described as attp or ctos. If you want to find out what your TOS file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for TOS File Extension
a tos executable file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with TOS files
- Associate the TOS file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open executable files. Because only the current version supports the latest TOS file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available TOSwin2 update.
- To make sure that your TOS file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .TOS file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
