What is a TOS file?

TOS files mostly belong to TOSwin2. TOS files can refer to two distinct types. One type is an Atari ST executable file. This file contains binary code meant to run on Atari ST systems and has a legacy structure linked with systems like the ST Speech System and utilities such as TOSwin2.

How to open TOS files

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our analysis of the TOS files produces the following result:

The TOS file extension is not common and is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in TOS files:

• 30% of all TOS files are STZip SFX archive executable files. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 28 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. .grJ9. Some examples of file names are SPEECH20.TOS or Stspeech.tos.
• 15% of all TOS files use the popular .NET file format. The .NET format is used to save Microsoft .NET Framework objects to a file (ex. save game state as file) via object serialization. Such a .NET object may contain functions and data like settings, images or videos. These files are not pure binary files and are therefore readable and interpretable with a text editor. The files are 1 KB to 1.1 KB in size, with a median of 1 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as FAssembly-CSharp, Version=0.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null, PlayerData, currentObjectiveIDs, currentObjectiveSteps, dateTime, dayOfSave, itemNames, money and completed. An example of a file name is sdatar60.tos.
