Opening a TPI File
The TPI file type is primarily associated with Touch Portal.
What is a TPI file?
Your TPI file is not a single standard format but a label for various specialized file types. In many cases it is used as a Touch Portal Icon, where the file is actually a ZIP archive used to store icon settings for the Touch Portal application.
Other formats include:
- Textured Polygonal Image: Used by Football Manager as a theme or wallpaper file. For details, see Football Manager.
- BACnet Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement: A file used in testing and verifying adapted BACnet systems. More information is available at BACnet International.
- Thumbnail Image Format: Employed in image projects (e.g., by Topaz Gigapixel AI). Visit ACDSee for further insight.
- Windows Executable Plugin: An EXE file that stores third-party plugin information for video software like TMPGEnc Video Mastering Works 5. Details are on the TMPGEnc webpage.
- Game Data File: Used by NetDragon Websoft to store game-related information.
Each variant uses the TPI extension but differs internally. To open or view a TPI file, the approach depends on its origin. If it is a ZIP archive (as in the Touch Portal Icon case), you can extract it with a standard archive tool. If it is an image or theme file, use an appropriate image viewer or the related application. Executable or plugin files require the native software environment to run safely.
FilExt.com tip: It is wise to inspect the file’s header or review its source to decide which specialized tool to use.
How do you open TPI files?
You need a suitable software like Touch Portal to open a TPI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TPI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TPI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert TPI files:
- Touch Portal
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. TPI files are often referred to as Touch Portal miscs because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Tonline File
- Visual Test Shell File(tests BACnet function of building automation equipment) [Also called EPICS (electronic protocol implementation conformance statement)]
TPI file extension format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the TPI files is as follows:
TPI is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in TPI files:
- 30% of all TPI files internally use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one TPI file. Primarily 5 to 70 files are included. A little tip: If you rename the file extension to .zip and then double-click, you will see the included files and images. TPI files are between 29 KB and 3 MB in size. An example of a file name is discord_vanilla_icons.tpi or StreamingIconPack.tpi. Files like these have the following tags: pack, icons, icon, streaming, discord, vanilla, dark and ikon.
- 20% of all TPI files have the same signature PICS 0. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The average file size is 94 KB with most files being between 7 KB and 350 KB in size. The keywords BACnet Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement, PICS 0, -- BACnet, BACnet/IP Interface, Vendor Name, Product Name, Product Model, Product Model Number, -- http://www.eaton.com/powerxpert, Eaton Power and Xpert are typical for these files. The file name bacnet-epics_55555.tpi or epics_vts3_pxgx_1002.tpi is characteristic of these files. Files like these have the following tags: epics, bacnet, pxgx, pxmp, gateway, pxbcm, side and west.
All other TPI files (50%) have different formats, the following 5 formats exist: EXE and IPTDXT. They are often associated with format, arbi, background, fusion, adobe, voicemeeter, valorant, spdrman, image, light or suite. You can get all the details of your TPI file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .tpi file to analyze" above.

How to solve problems with TPI files
- Associate the TPI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest TPI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Touch Portal update.
- To make sure that your TPI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
