What is a TXM file?

TXM files mostly belong to TXM Writer. TXM files are used for several distinct purposes. They are not one single format but a label applied to different kinds of files.

Rich Text Documents: The largest group is made up of rich text format files created by TXM Writer. These files are text documents that retain basic formatting.

Scientific Data: some of TXM files store data from a Zeiss X‐ray microscope. These files, which sometimes use a Microsoft Compound format internally, are used with tools like TXM-Wizard or Thermo Fisher Scientific Avizo to manage 3D tomography data.

Medical Reports: some are text medical report files provided by TXM and Teleradiology Solutions (TRS), containing structured radiological information.

Game Files: A few TXM files hold game texture metadata used by games such as Starbound (see Starbound) and employ engines like Torque Game Engine.

Texture Maps: some are defined as Taito Texture Maps. They serve as simple texture image formats for Taito Type X2 systems; more info is available on the Taito website.

Insurance Documents: The smallest group includes title insurance documents or text‐based form templates, created by TitleExpert or TextMaker (SoftPro Corp).

How can I open a TXM file?

You need a suitable software like TXM Writer to open a TXM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TXM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TXM file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the TXM files is as follows:

An TXM file covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in TXM files:

• 45% of all TXM files have the same signature 17 00 00 00. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 5 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. These files are attributed to letter, landlord, singleproperty, agreement and body.
• 15% of all TXM files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also called Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. Sections and streams in the file are named AutoRecon, ImageData1, ImageData2, ImageData3, ImageInfo, Version, Annot, DataBundleVer, DetAssemblyInfo, ReconInputTomoParams, ReconSettings, Selection, exeVersion and ConfigureBackup. The files are on average 1 GB in size and range from 1 GB to 2 GB. Such files sometimes refer to recon, tomo, cochlea, sample, stitch, mouse and wire.
