Opening a USB File
The USB file type is primarily associated with LeCroy WaveMaster.
What is a USB file?
For example, some USB files hold USB protocol traces captured by devices like the LeCroy WaveMaster. These files contain data recorded during USB communications and are used with tools such as the LeCroy USB Protocol Suite to troubleshoot hardware issues.
Other USB files are bootable images meant for USB drives. These images are used to create a bootable medium for operating systems and are managed by virtualization programs like Oracle VM VirtualBox (VirtualBox) and utilities such as Rufus.
A third use is for storing databases. In some cases, a USB file is an SQLite database file. These files follow the SQL format and can be opened with SQLite tools (SQLite).
Another use is as firmware update files for USB devices. This type of USB file is used with firmware programming tools like Segger J-Flash (Segger) to update a device's internal firmware.

USB file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the USB files:
USB is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes many different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in USB files:
- 20% of all USB files use the same file format, which have the signature LeCroy Analyzer Trace File . The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 30 MB in size and range from 9 MB to 230 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as LeCroy Analyzer Trace File and USB Protocol Suite. These files are often associated with data and step.
- 15% of all USB files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "EB 63 90" at the beginning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 480 MB with most files being between 190 MB and 890 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ZRr= and Floppy. Examples of file names are sol-11_4-ai-x86.usb or FreeNAS-9.2.1.9-RELEASE-x86.usb. Files like these are about release and text.
All the rest of the USB files (65%) have different formats, the following 4 formats exist: SQL and LOFI. Files like these are sometimes linked to sparc, disp, uboot, phwoar, layout, assw, criu or sbfw. If you want to find out what your USB file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
