What is a WCP file?

WCP files mostly belong to Windows Movie Maker.

WCP files come in several types. They share the same extension but serve different purposes.
Use the matching tool for the file type you have:

• Video Editing Projects: some of these files use the Microsoft Compound File format. They are created by Windows Movie Maker and sometimes used by systems like Vegas Pro (EDIUS).
• Scientific Data: some are Whole Cell Patch Clamp data files made with WinWCP for recording cell activity.

How to open a WCP file

You need a suitable software like Windows Movie Maker to open a WCP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. WCP is not a commonly used file extension and covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 35% of all WCP files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. A typical file size is 100 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 10 years ago. Files like these are sometimes connected to movie, christmas and video.
• 15% of all WCP files use the same file format, which have the signature 87 8A 52 82 0C C2 CB 34 94 17 3B CA EB 9F 5F 38. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 59 KB with most files being between 42 KB and 160 KB in size.

The remaining 50% of all WCP files are different files with different signatures, the following 8 formats exist: WinCHM Project, JSON, ZIP, VER, zXZ and WebCopier.
