What is a WEBLOC file?

WEBLOC files mostly belong to Finder by Apple. A WEBLOC file contains a URL saved when a user drags a web address from a browser's address bar onto a path in Finder. This file is similar to the URL file created by the File Explorer on Windows under similar circumstances. However, unlike a URL file which is written in plain text, a macOS WEBLOC file is written in Extensible Markup Language (XML) or saved as a binary property list. Double-clicking a WEBLOC file opens the web page in the computer's default browser.
