What is a WMZ file?

WMZ files mostly belong to Media Player by Microsoft. WMZ files are mainly used to store skins which define the appearance of the user interface of the Media Player audio/video player on Windows desktop operating system. The file is a ZIP archive comprising graphics and Jscript (JavaScript) which defines the appearance and behavior of user interface elements. The main control file in a WMZ skin archive is the WMS skin definition file. Other contents of the archive include BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, and JS files. A different WMZ file format is used to store Windows Metafile (WMF) and Enhanced Metafile (EMF) images compressed with Gzip compression algorithm. These images are usually created when older versions of Office programs save documents in HTML format when sending documents over email. The compressed image in WMZ files consists of raster or vector graphics defined as drawing commands, object definitions and object properties.

How to open a WMZ file

You need a suitable software like Media Player to open a WMZ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit WMZ files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. • 99% of all WMZ files are Compressed graphic files, which are based on the GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. • 1% of all WMZ files use the ZIP algorithm, that is, a WMZ file includes multiple compressed files. Most often they are 41 to 200 compressed files. File names are e.g. eq_down.bmp, eq_hover.bmp and eq_up.bmp. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are 52 KB to 3 MB in size, with a median of 70 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. a``Pa, cd`i and netgen.wmsSDZ. The file name Revert.wmz is typical for these files.
