What is a WU file?

WU files mostly belong to COSMOS by University of Memphis. The WU file format belongs to the Computational Optical Sectioning Microscopy Open Source (COSMOS) Software package developed by the Computational Imaging Research Laboratory (CIRL) at the University of Memphis. All image files opened in COSMOS must have the WASHU header (WU) extension. The WASHU header is 1024 bytes long, and can be added to a RAW image from the Add Header Tab available in the COSMOS Tools. Along with adding the WASHU header, the tool also converts the file extension from RAW to WU. Images that are not in the RAW format must be converted before adding the WASHU header because the tool only processes RAW files.

.WU File Won't Open? Here is What You Can Do

  2. Check the Header: Open the file in a hex editor or text viewer to inspect the first few bytes:
    • Readable text or XML might indicate metadata.
    • Binary patterns suggest a raw image format.
    • "PK" indicates a zipped archive.
  3. Use the Original Software: You will likely need the original program, such as COSMOS (developed by the University of Memphis) or a compatible scientific image viewer; if unsure, ask the sender.
