What is an XBM file?
How to open XBM files
You need a suitable software like XnView to open an XBM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XBM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XBM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- XnView by XnSoft
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XBM files are often referred to as XnView raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (texture) by CD ProjektThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing video game in which players take on the role of Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer who goes on a search for his adopted daughter. Some textures used in the game are stored in XBM files. This file format is classified as Raster Image.
XBM file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the XBM files comes to the following conclusion:
The XBM file ending includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in XBM files:
- 45% of all XBM files are X Bitmap files, which are based on the Source file format. A source code is the set of instructions written by a programmer using a computer programming language like JavaScript, C++ or Basic. This code is translated into machine language by a compiler. The translated result is called app, program or executable. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are on average 6 KB in size and range from 240 bytes to 360 KB. The file type was developed 20 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords define, height, width, bits, static char and 0x00, 0x00 are typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to logo, fotboll, sample, mall, barcode and image.
- 45% of all XBM files use the same file format, which have the signature CR2W. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 2 KB to 2 MB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as CBitmapTexture, CR2W, ECooking, Uint, cookingPlatform, height and width. Files like these have the following tags: geralt, atlas, base, elements, board and metal.
All other XBM files (10%) have no consistent format, the following 3 formats exist: GZIP. These files sometimes refer to request, body, background, milfgaard, customer, naked, triss or mask. If you want to find out what your XBM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
