Opening a XEM File
The XEM file type is primarily associated with X3.
What is a XEM file?
Most versions of these files work as Windows executable applications. They behave similarly to standard .exe files and may be protected by systems such as Themida.
A close variation is seen in files that some companies label as X-Mag data files, where the file still functions as an executable but is tied to custom software like that from XMAG.
An additional variant is used for exporting media in video surveillance setups. These files, sometimes described as XProtect Exported Media, contain embedded JPEG images and are associated with the Xeoma video surveillance system. For more details on this use, see Xeoma.
- If your file is a Windows executable, it should run in a standard Windows environment.
- If it is meant for a specific application (like Xeoma), you will need that software to view its contents properly.
- Always check the file’s properties and the source before opening, as executables can run code that affects your system.
How to open XEM files
You need a suitable software like X3 to open a XEM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XEM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XEM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XEM files:
- X3
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XEM files are often referred to as X3 executables because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- eManager (Metering Unit Credits for File Use) by XGenics Ltd.eManager is an electronic guide to office or procedures manuals and for compliance to regulations, rules and procedures. Specifies metering units/credits for use of eManager forms/files. This file format is classified as Text.
XEM file format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the XEM files looks like this:
The XEM file extension is not widely used. Such a file is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. The following file formats are most commonly found in XEM files:
- 65% of all XEM files are based on the popular EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The average file size is 2 MB with most files being between 16 KB and 5 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The keywords !This program cannot be run in DOS mode are typical for these files. The file name x3.xem or xcorona.xem is typical for these files. Such files are related to xcoronahost.
- 25% of all XEM files have the same signature 00 00 00 00. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 1 MB to 13 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: ustcust, SustTustUust, steust and tuustwust. Some examples of file names are xmag.xem or xnina.xem.
The remaining 10% of all XEM files are files with no common format, the following 3 formats can be found: boundaryjpg. If you want to find out what your XEM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for XEM File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.
EXEFile: %ProgramFiles%\Tivity Software\Xtivity\Xtivity.exe %1

How to solve problems with XEM files
- Associate the XEM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open executables. Because only the current version supports the latest XEM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available X3 update.
- To make sure that your XEM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XEM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
