What is an XLB file

XLB files mostly belong to Excel by Microsoft. XLB is the file format used by an Excel toolbar. Excel is a spreadsheet software developed by Microsoft. It is a part of the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software. The XLB file stores custom configurations for the toolbars and menus in Excel. Custom configurations mean that commands can be added to the toolbar according to the preferences of the user. XLB is a binary format file and is typically located in the \Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel directory. XLB files are used to store manual customizations of toolbars in older versions of Excel, but newer versions of Excel use the EXPORTEDUI format to store customizations for the ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar. However, the XLB file is still used by Excel and may store customizations made by macros. Common file names for the XLB file are Excel.XLB, Excel5.XLB, Excel8.XLB, Excel10.XLB, Excel11.XLB, Excel12.XLB, and Excel15.XLB. The file name Administrator.XLB is used by Excel in Windows NT.

How to open an XLB file

You need a suitable software like Excel from Microsoft to open an XLB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. XLB is a very commonly used file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 96% of all XLB files are Microsoft Excel worksheet files. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. XLB files can be up to 23 MB in size, but are often around 10 KB - 23 MB. This file type is new and state-of-the-art. Excel15.xlb is a typical file name. These files can be linked to kopie.
• 1% of all XLB files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). XLB files contain an app name Microsoft Excel. There is also a globally unique identifier 00020820-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains sections that are named something like DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation and Workbook. The files are often between 6 KB and 85 KB in size.
