Opening an XSP File
The XSP file type is primarily associated with Domino Designer.
What is an XSP file?
XSP files are not one single format. They are used in several fields and can contain different kinds of data.
These files may hold:
- PDF Form Templates – Files that use the PDF format to store form information. They work with PDF tools such as those from PDFsharp or Oracle Forms.
- Cross Stitch Patterns – Files that keep designs for cross stitch projects. Programs like Cross Stitch Professional Platinum or Pattern Maker Viewer open these files.
- Compressed Archives – Some XSP files are actually ZIP archives. They can be used for woodworking project files (by XSight or Woodwork for Inventor) or as compressed game archives (by X-Bot or XFLib).
- X-ray Spectroscopy Data – These files may contain data from X-ray analysis, used by instruments such as EDAX Genesis Spectrum or Oxford Instruments EDS.
- Media Playlists – Certain XSP files are XML-based playlists. They are used by media systems like Kodi or XBMC. For more details, visit Kodi website.
- Web or Application Pages – Some are used with Lotus Domino XPages to deliver web content. They include HTML or XML markup. More information is available on the IBM site.
- CAD or Infograph Data – Other files use XML to store CAD drawing instructions (for example, the Infograph Markup Stamp used with iGrafx FlowCharter). Visit Opentext for further info.
- Scanner Images or Schema Pages – A few XSP files are made for scanner images or XML schema pages, associated with products like Xilinx ISE and XSPICE. See AMD website for more details.
Note: The file’s purpose depends on its origin. The internal structure may be PDF, XML, HTML, or a ZIP container. To decide how to open it, inspect the file (for example, view it in a text editor) and use the software related to that specific type.
FilExt.com tip: Look at the file header. If you see XML or HTML tags, a text editor or a web application (such as IBM Domino Designer for XPages) might be needed. If the file seems binary, try an appropriate archive or PDF tool.
How do you open XSP files?
You need a suitable software like Domino Designer to open an XSP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XSP file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XSP file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XSP files:
- Domino Designer
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XSP files are often referred to as Domino Designer miscs because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Cross Stitch Professional (Design File) by DP SoftwareCross Stitch Professional for Windows can be used for converting photographs and clipart into cross stitch charts. There is a trial/demo/viewer program link on the site's home page. This file format is classified as CAD/CAM.
XSP file format:
To find out what program is needed to open XSP files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the XSP files comes to the following conclusion:
XSP is not a commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 20% of all XSP files store the data in the PDF file format. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. XSP files are between 73 KB and 740 KB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. The file name pdfcontract.xsp or pdfadc.xsp is typical for these files. Such files sometimes refer to contract, and almost always comprise personal data.
- 15% of all XSP files use the ZIP algorithm, the XSP file contains a number of compressed files. An XSP file can contain up to 50 files (mostly 1 - 30). File names are e.g. \Languages\. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. XSP files can be up to 800 KB in size, but are often around 10 KB - 270 KB.
The remaining 65% of all XSP files are files with no common format, often e.g. XBMC Smart Playlist and XSP. Sometimes used for randomversion, image or stamp. If you want to find out which format your XSP file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xsp file to analyze".
Technical Data for XSP File Extension
an xsp multi-purpose container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XSP files
- Associate the XSP file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open multi-purpose container files. Because only the current version supports the latest XSP file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Domino Designer update.
- To make sure that your XSP file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XSP file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
