What is an XTI file?

XTI files mostly belong to TwinCAT. XTI files serve different functions depending on the application. They are not a single format, but rather a file extension used in several specialized systems.

TwinCAT Use: The file is an XML trace item or configuration data file used by the TwinCAT XAR Import/Export Tool for automation control. This file contains XML data that TwinCAT 3 systems read and process. For more detailed guidelines, visit the Beckhoff website.

XTrackCAD Use: some of XTI files are created by XTrackCAD. In this role, they store track items to assist in designing model train layouts.

Texas Instruments Use: some of these files function as configuration files for Texas Instruments systems, linked with the T5RTI tool. Further information may be found at the Immobilienteam website.

Viewing and Editing: Although these files are often in XML format and readable in any text editor, they are best handled with the corresponding software to properly interpret the data.

How can I open an XTI file?

You need a suitable software like TwinCAT to open an XTI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XTI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XTI file directly in the browser:. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. The file type is very recent. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0"?> and <TcSmItem xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="http://www.beckhoff.com/schemas/2012/07/TcSmProject" TcSmVersion="1.0" TcVersion=". Examples of file names are Device 1 (EtherCAT).xti. Such files are related to drive and term.
• 20% of all XTI files start with the bytes #XTrackCAD Version: , which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are on average 2 KB in size and range from 590 bytes to 2 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: #XTrackCAD Version, VERSION 10 3.0.0, 5.1.2a, Date, STRUCTURE, D 0.000000 0.000000 and Canal Boat Bridge T018b. A usual file name is ScaleScenes T018b Canal Bridge and Boat in OO.xti. Such files are related to scenes, scale, bridge, canal and boat.
