Opening an XX File
The XX file type is primarily associated with ZipGenius.
What is an XX file?
- Main Usage: XX files were primarily created in order to be able to send 7-bit ASCII text files via e-mail without the risk of them getting corrupted. However, due to the fact that XX files were created for older e-mail programs which were unable to recognize binary attatchments, XX files have become largely obsolete as modern e-mail programs are able to inherently support binary file transfers and convert binary attachments automatically, while also not requiring files to be encoded in order for them to be sent. Additionally, XXEncoding is a strategy that converts 8-bit data, such as programs, into a 6-bit format which is utilized for transmission through 6 to 8-bit electronic mail networks. This style of encoding is similar to UUEncoding, which is a form of binary-to-text encoding that originated in many Unix programs such as UUEncode and UUDecode.
How can I open an XX file?
You need a suitable software like ZipGenius to open an XX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XX files:
- ZipGenius by ZipGenius
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XX files are often referred to as ZipGenius compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Arcedit Temporary FileXXEncoded file (ASCII) (xxdecode/xxencode). 7bit ASCII attachments for email programs that can't handle binary attachments
XX file format details:
To find out what program is needed to open XX files, you need to determine the file format. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the XX files comes to the following conclusion:
The XX file extension is not widely used. Such a file includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in XX files are:
- 60% of all XX files start with the bytes xph#486, which are crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. Most of these files are 160 KB to 76 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. ~+<=AA, xph#4869!, '%<NY,*AR^1/FXc64, Zxuy{ and LJa~v. The following filename is common: Boat.xx or Vehicle.xx. Files like these have the following tags: anim, prop and lights.
- 10% of all XX files start with the magic bytes 08 00 00 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are on average 5 MB in size and range from 340 KB to 8 MB.
All the rest of the XX files (30%) have different formats, such as ZIP. These files are often connected to body. If you want to find out what your XX file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
