Opening a ZEN File
The ZEN file type is primarily associated with Zenon Logic Simulator.
What is a ZEN file?
Zenon Logic Files: ZEN files are used as project data files in the Zenon Logic Simulator. They store control logic settings and project details. Some files are also known as Zelio Soft project files or work with ZEN-ON Z-Sequencer in industrial automation setups.
Gothic Game Archives: In other cases, ZEN files contain save game data for Gothic II. They archive game progress and configuration data used by the Gothic game engine. For more details, check out the Gothic official page.
- They use proprietary internal structures.
- Each use case requires its own dedicated software.
- Back up your files before making any changes.
FilExt.com tip: Remember that despite sharing the same extension, these files serve different purposes. Use the Zenon Logic Simulator for control projects and Gothic II for game archives.
How to open ZEN files
You need a suitable software like Zenon Logic Simulator to open a ZEN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ZEN file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ZEN file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ZEN files:
- Zenon Logic Simulator
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ZEN files are often referred to as Zenon Logic Simulator data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- OpticsBuilder (CAD file) by ZEMAXOpticsBuilder is a software that allows opticians to design optical and illumination systems. Its features include lens design, illumination as well as light beam propogation. In addition, it allows user to evaluate optical performance. The ZEN file format stores the face number assignments for a CAD object that is imported into non-sequential mode in OpticsBuilder.
ZEN file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the ZEN files produces the following result:
ZEN is rarely used as a file extension and covers different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 30% of all ZEN files have the same signature 54 00 3B 00 00 00 00 00. They consist of unreadable binary data. Most of these files are 64 KB to 2 MB in size. The file type is relatively new.
- 30% of all ZEN files use the same file format, which have the signature 06 10. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The files are 58 KB to 58 KB in size, with a median of 58 KB. Such files sometimes refer to maric.
All other ZEN files (40%) have no consistent format, often, for example, ZenGin and recently. The category is export or hero. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your ZEN file!
Technical Data for ZEN File Extension
a zen data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ZEN files
- Associate the ZEN file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest ZEN file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Zenon Logic Simulator update.
- To make sure that your ZEN file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
