Opening a ZVI File
The ZVI file type is primarily associated with Zeiss ZEN Blue.
What is a ZVI file?
How to open ZVI files
You need a suitable software like Zeiss ZEN Blue to open a ZVI file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ZVI file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ZVI file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert ZVI files:
- Zeiss ZEN Blue
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ZVI files are often referred to as Zeiss ZEN Blue raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- AxioVision (Saved Microscope Image) by Carl Zeiss AGWhether you are a beginner in digital microscopy or an imaging expert, AxioVision will guide you to reproducible results with the aide of structured workflows. When you acquire and process microscopic images using AxioVision, valuable data about your images are produced which should be saved as fully as possible alongside the images. Besides pixel-related image data, information about the acquisition conditions is also particularly important. The ZVI image format saves both types of data together in a single file, regardless of whether your experiment involves the acquisition of simple two-dimensional photomicrographs or 5D experiments with living cells. This can be a video or still image. This file format is classified as Video.
ZVI file extension format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the ZVI files:
An ZVI file predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 98% of all ZVI files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. The first 8 bytes of the CFB format are D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). There is also a globally unique identifier f697757e-21ff-11d2-bec0-006008493c9b. The file contains sections that are named something like Image, Tags, DocumentSummaryInformation, SummaryInformation and Thumbnail. The average file size is 8 MB with most files being between 2 MB and 30 MB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Files like these are sometimes connected to snap, control, slide, aufnahme, position, beforetreatmentx, stitched, sample and dapi.
All other ZVI files (2%) have no uniform format. If you want to find out which format your ZVI file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .zvi file to analyze".
Technical Data for ZVI File Extension
a zvi compound image file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ZVI files
- Associate the ZVI file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compound image files. Because only the current version supports the latest ZVI file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Zeiss ZEN Blue update.
- To make sure that your ZVI file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ZVI file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
