What is a JOB file

JOB files mostly belong to Nesting by Metamation. A JOB file is a CNC machine job generated by Nesting computer-aided manufacturing software. This file contains cutting logic, toolpaths etc. generated from a 2D or 3D part model. Another type of JOB file is a task created with Task Scheduler task automation software for Windows. JOB is also the filename extension of an external job data file exported from or imported into OrCAD PCB Designer. Survey Pro field survey software uses a JOB file to save survey data. System Center systems management software uses a JOB file to store a sequence of commands and actions used for process automation.

How to open JOB files

You need a suitable software like Nesting to open a JOB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To find out what program is needed to open JOB files, you need to determine the file format. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. The JOB file extension is quite common and includes different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in JOB files are:

25% of all JOB files belong to Trimble Access. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. Most of these files are 8 KB to 420 KB in size. The file type was created 10 years ago, but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Trimble General Survey Journal and LastJobSettings. These files can be linked to control.
5% of all JOB files internally utilize the UTF-16 (LE) file format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. Most of these files are 110 bytes to 140 bytes in size. The keywords ImageFileName and image are typical for these files. A common filename is default job.job. Such files are related to karme and image.

All other JOB files (70%) have different formats, often e.g. Labeler / Labels Unlimited, HTML, JetDB, XML, ZIP, DOC, GZIP, BEGINLJSCRIPT, VERSION, JOB, Cutoff, PJL, Program and EHEADER. Files like these are sometimes linked to task, jobname, mupdate, mupload, logo or update.
