Opening ARJ Files
The ARJ file type is primarily associated with ARJ.
What is an ARJ file?
- History: ARJ supports both single and multi-volume archives. This accounted for its popularity before the arrival of the Internet when the Bulletin Board System (BBS) was the premier online space for correspondence and file sharing. Dial-up connections and floppy disks in that time allowed for the transfer of very small file sizes, and the ability of ARJ to split files into multi-volume archives led to its popularity in a niche market.
- Usage: The extension was popular due to ARJ's benefits to the distribution of software, which it could split down into several chunks to store on separate floppy disks. The multi-volume archives have file extensions numbered from 000 to 999. 000 is the extension for the first volume of a split-archived file. ARJ is not an open format, but several Windows and MacOS archiving software support the unpacking of ARJ files.
How to open ARJ files
You need a suitable software like ARJ to open an ARJ file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your ARJ file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a ARJ file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. ARJ files are often referred to as ARJ compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 7-Zip (compressed archive file) by Igor Pavlov7-ZIP is a compressing and archiving utility for free that can combine several files into a much smaller one. This open-source application supports various packing and extraction formats and has a built-in file manager. 7-Zip allows opening EXE files as archives and decompressing them without having to launch first. 7-Zip uses the ARJ format to archive data. ARJ file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Below you will find our evaluation of the ARJ files:
The ARJ file extension is not found very often and is primarily used by a single program. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 75% of all ARJ files are associated with ARJ compressed archive. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The file size is in the range of 85 KB to 10 MB. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today. Such ARJ files store data about archive.
- 8% of all ARJ files are using the well-known RAR file format to store the data. RAR is a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error correction and file spanning. They consist of unreadable binary data. The files are often between 25 KB and 750 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Rar!.
All other ARJ files (17%) have no uniform format, often, for example, xcD. You can get all the details of your ARJ file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .arj file to view" above.

an arj compressed archive file is a special file format by ARJ and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with ARJ files
- Associate the ARJ file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest ARJ file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ARJ manufacturer website after an available ARJ update.
- To make sure that your ARJ file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .ARJ file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
