Opening MD Files
The MD file type is primarily associated with Markdown.
What is an MD file?
- Uses: MD files are generally used to format readme files. They are also used to create rich text using a plain text editor. MD files have their applications on online forums, websites such as GitHub, Reddit, Stack Exchange, etc. that use a re-implemented version of the language.
- Syntax: Markdown may be written using specific characters that provide simple formatting, for e.g.: _italic_, **bold**, ~~<s>strikethrough</s>~~ , etc.
Other uses: The MD extension is also used by metadata files, which store information about a separate but associated file which can either be a document, multimedia file, or objects. For instance a file called eLearning.doc, would have a meta-data file called eLearning.md. The MD extension may also be used by machine description files that are used to compile programs on Unix systems. These files are used to store instruction patterns for each instruction supported by the target machine.
How to open MD files
You need a suitable software like Markdown to open an MD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

MD file extension format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our analysis of the MD files produces the following result:
MD is a very commonly used file extension and uses a well-defined format that can be read by many programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in MD files:
- 95% of all MD files are Markdown Documentation files. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The average file size is 2 KB with most files being between 180 bytes and 14 KB in size. It is a modern file type. A common filename is README.md. Files like these have the following tags: changelog, install, license, read, card, contributing, template and tool.
The remaining 5% of all MD files are different files with different signatures. Tagged as guide, sspx, instructions, europe, media, creation, report or index. If you want to find out which format your MD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .md file to view".
