All about XHTML Files
The XHTML file type is primarily associated with Firefox.
What is an XHTML file
How can I open an XHTML file?
You need a suitable software like Firefox to open an XHTML file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XHTML file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XHTML file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XHTML files:
- Firefox by Mozilla
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XHTML files are often referred to as Firefox web (source)s because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Acrobat (document) by AdobeAcrobat is a cross-platform program for creating, editing, and signing documents in Portable Document Format (PDF). It can open an XHTML file saved in PDF format. This file format is classified as Page Layout.
- Dreamweaver (web page) by AdobeDreamweaver is a low-code website development environment with drag-and-drop support. It can create an XHTML web page. This file format is classified as Web (source). Related links: XHTML
- Sublime (web page) by SublimeSublime is a cross-platform source code and plain text editing software. It can create and edit a website in Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML). This file format is classified as Web (source). Related links: XHTML
XHTML file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below is our analysis of the XHTML files:
The XHTML file extension is rather rarely used and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 35% of all XHTML files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are often between 1 KB and 230 KB in size. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, html xmlns, http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml, <!DOCTYPE html, PUBLIC, <?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" and href. Files like these are about form and page.
- 30% of all XHTML files store the data in the HTML file format. HTML is short for HyperText Markup Language. It is the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. XHTML files can be up to 200 KB in size, but are often around 270 bytes - 200 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <!DOCTYPE html>, <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"><head><link type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" href="/icce-core/javax.faces.resource/theme.css.xhtml?ln=primefaces-aristo" /><link type="text/c, DOCTYPE html PUBLIC, DTD XHTML 1 and PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD. The following filename is common: availableTranscripts.xhtml.
The remaining 35% of all XHTML files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. PDF. Sometimes used for report, index, show or section. If you want to find out what your XHTML file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an xhtml web page is a special file format by Mozilla and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with XHTML files
- Associate the XHTML file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open web pages. Because only the current version supports the latest XHTML file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Mozilla manufacturer website after an available Firefox update.
- To make sure that your XHTML file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XHTML file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
